The company has unveiled a wide range of products to meet RFID demand, including the new AD Fusion.
August 21, 2026
By: Greg Hrinya
RFID adoption has never been greater in the label industry. The technology was once impractical to adopt for most brands, but product innovation and greater demand has made smart labeling far more accessible and prevalent.
Major retailers, such as Walmart, have established initiatives to integrate RFID for inventory management and supply chain efficiency. Plus, RFID is available in far more markets. The technology has expanded beyond applications like traditional retail into sectors like healthcare, logistics, automotive, and food.
“The market is evolving rapidly, with technological advancements and a growing range of applications enhancing efficiency, reducing costs, and improving customer engagement,” says Tiffany Howe, product manager, Intelligent Label, Avery Dennison. “Retail mandates and industry-wide standardization efforts have made RFID implementation more accessible and attractive. Innovations have reduced costs and simplified the adoption process, making RFID more feasible for businesses of all sizes. Additionally, technological advancements have enhanced the robustness and reliability of RFID products, even in challenging environments.”
Brands also boast an increased awareness of RFID’s benefits. There is a realization that efficiency and sustainability are available with this technology, which has further driven adoption. In the future, the label and packaging landscape could shift with the proliferation of smart technologies.
“RFID technology has the potential to revolutionize retail tags and labels by enabling real-time inventory tracking, improving supply chain transparency, and enhancing customer engagement,” explains Howe. “It also supports sustainability initiatives by promoting efficiency, reducing waste, and facilitating a circular economy. As the technology continues to advance, its role in driving innovation and sustainability across the retail sector will only grow.”
Given the recent growth, companies will need to manage several challenges present in this market. For example, there are information security concerns. Even though the industry has worked to remedy these challenges, there needs to be continued monitoring. Plus, affordability will always be a consideration, especially for some brands entering the space.
“Early concerns about data security have been addressed through industry-wide standardization, but ongoing vigilance is required,” states Howe. “And despite simplifications, integrating RFID into existing systems can still pose challenges for some organizations.”
Going forward, sustainability will play an increased role, as well. Continued innovation is needed to address sustainability concerns, such as reducing the use of plastics in RFID products, adds Howe.
Avery Dennison has unveiled a wide range of products to meet RFID demand. The AD IdentiFresh Inlay Series is advancing the use of RFID technology in fresh food categories. These include bakery, meat, deli and produce.
“Avery Dennison’s proprietary antenna design and inlay construction overcome key operational challenges in the food retail environment, improving read performance on densely stacked items, particularly within high-moisture cold environments like meat cases,” notes Howe. “The compact inlay form factor is designed to fit easily within existing label formats, enabling seamless integration with current workflows and labeling equipment, minimizing operational disruption.”
Meanwhile, Avery Dennison’s UCODE X Portfolio features the newest generation chip. This product delivers benchmark-setting read sensitivity (up to -26.2 dBm), flexible memory configurations (EPC up to 208 bits, 0–32 bits user memory), and built-in data integrity mechanisms like Memory Safeguard.
Avery Dennison has launched technologies for in-mold labeling (IML), as well. Here, each RFID inlay is specially designed to withstand the high heat and pressure of injection molding. Avery Dennison therefore ensures consistent performance throughout the manufacturing process.
“The result is a label that’s durable enough for repeated washing and handling, with integrated features that enable fast, accurate item-level scanning to reduce manual effort and improve efficiency,” remarks Howe. “The labels work with standard in-mold labeling equipment and materials. By supporting longer product lifespans and providing greater visibility across operations, the IML portfolio helps reduce waste and contributes to more sustainable, closed-loop systems.”
Most recently, Avery Dennison also released AD Fusion, what it says is a first-of-its-kind program that is set to transform how label and packaging converters adopt RFID technology. Powered by innovative SmartFace technology, AD Fusion delivers customizable materials with pre-inserted RFID inlays. This removes the traditional barriers to entry and helps businesses meet the rapidly growing demand for smart labels. They can accomplish this quickly and cost-effectively.
“We also offer the Rapid RFID service program for our customers,” says Howe. “It’s designed to fast-track your RFID projects with unmatched speed and reliability. We offer a curated selection of high-performance RFID inlays, all in stock and ready to ship with a guaranteed one-week lead time.”
